The queen of daytime TV has just issued her latest decree.



Join me and my 378 staffers and go vegan for one week, she declares from her Chicago throne. Oprah was inspired to go vegan after reading Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change the World by Kathy Freston, which is a brand new book promoting a vegan diet.

I imagine that this will put millions of people on the vegan bandwagon as they answer the call of Oprah, even if it is for just one week.



From my understanding, it takes at least two weeks to experience the positive health benefits of doing a vegan diet. Many in the first week are a bit sick as their bodies adjust to the new way of eating.



Personally, I have no problem with veganism, but it bugs me how one person, such as Oprah, can have such an influence on the masses.

Does "The Pill" Cause Weight Gain?



Far be it from me to claim any expertise on this subject, but a recent study casts doubts on the long-held belief that the birth control pill causes weight gain.



There is a small catch, however as this was a primate study.



Half the rhesus monkeys were of normal weight at the start of the research and the other half were considered obese. The team administered doses to match the monkeys' weight so that it would mirror the amount women take to prevent pregnancy.

The study authors documented the animals' weight, body fat, food intake, activity levels, and lean muscle mass.




  • The monkeys in the "obese" group actually lost about 8.5 percent of their weight and 12 percent of their body fat while they were on the pill, apparently because of a spike in their metabolism.

  • Those in the "normal" group stayed at a steady weight throughout the course of the trial.



Lead author, Dr. Judy Cameron, said;

This study suggests that worries about weight gain with pill use appear to be based more on fiction than on fact.



Dr. Lisa Perriera, an assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, agrees with Dr. Cameron;

Birth control pills usually only cause a temporary, maybe five-pound weight gain having to do with bloating. It's real, but it usually goes away for most women taking the pill. It's just their body adjusting to being on new medication.

However I struggle with the need for dogma and rigid rules around dieting. I, for example, go fishing. I occasionally catch a fish (and abide by all fishing regulations and limits). I prepare the fish and eat it. Even though I agree with many of the principles of veganism, I will not stop fishing to satisfy the requirements of dietary dogma.

New Dietary Guidelines For Americans



The government have issued the first update in five years of their "Dietary Guidelines for Americans."



But, despite significant talk about the U.S. obesity crisis, many of the major cornerstones of those previous guidelines have remained intact.



On the upside, the guidelines do emphasize the need for physical activity, and encourage eating more foods like vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, seafood, and also cutting back on sodium, trans fats, sugar, and refined grains.

  • Fiber - 14 g per 1,000 calories.

  • Potassium - 4,700 mg.

  • Fruits and vegetables - at least 2.5 cups.

  • Refined grains - less than 3 oz.

  • Sodium - under 2,300 mg of sodium a day, and less than 1,500 mg for all African Americans, and those with hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (including children), as well as people older than 50.



The sodium recommendations have upset The American Heart Association, who wanted to see blanket advice on reducing sodium intake over the whole population, not just specific groups of individuals. AHA President, Ralph Sacco, MD, said this;

Overall healthcare spending continues to rise in the U.S.; increasing from 16.6% of gross domestic product in 2009, to 17.6% in 2010. According to government data spending on hospital services, doctor visits, medications, and other health needs jumped 4% to $2.5 trillion in 2009.

Avocado Beauty Basket Giveaway
